MACROMEDIA FLASH PLAYER INTEGRATED INTO NEOPLANET 5.0 'INTERNET DESKTOP' FOR A MORE COMPELLING WEB EXPERIENCE
New Internet Desktop Enables Rich-Media Advertising with Macromedia Flash
Phoenix, Ariz. and San Francisco, Calif., Sept. 20, 1999 -- NeoPlanet, Inc. and Macromedia, (NASDAQ: MACR) today announced the integration of the Macromedia FlashTM Player into the NeoPlanet 5.0 Internet Desktop, a new program that merges Web browsing, email, instant messaging, chat and community into one desktop application. Macromedia's Flash Player is the industry standard for delivering high-impact, vector-based Web sites with motion, sound, interactivity, and graphics, and is a key interface component of this next-generation Internet Desktop. In addition to including the Flash Player as part of its standard download, NeoPlanet becomes the first browser to use the Flash Player's interface design capabilities for designing portions of the browser itself.
The NeoPlanet Internet Desktop's dialer and registration screens, as well as the promotional and online tutorial interfaces of the application, now boast high-impact Flash visuals and interactive elements, adding a compelling new dimension to the application's overall design. The NeoPlanet 'InfoBox', a persistent advertising space built into the NeoPlanet Channel Bar, now supports Macromedia Flash movies, enabling advertisers to serve high-impact, rich-media ads to NeoPlanet's installed base of 2.3 million. Advertisers are increasingly using Flash as a key technology for creating more engaging rich-media ads that result in higher click-through rates.
"NeoPlanet is always striving to raise the standard for personalized, rich Internet experiences," said Drew Cohen, President and CEO of NeoPlanet. "With Flash Player integration, NeoPlanet continues to be a leader in delivering exciting Internet technologies to its users and giving advertisers innovative ways to communicate their brands online."
Private-label versions of the NeoPlanet Internet Desktop are currently distributed by Lycos, IBM, Packard Bell NEC, New Line Cinema, McAfee/Network Associates, Loral Space & Communications and other media and technology leaders. With NeoPlanet, third-party distributors are able to leverage a unique desktop software presence to build their brand and drive traffic to their properties.
"NeoPlanet's integration of the Flash Player showcases how Flash technology adds life to Web applications," said David Mendels, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Macromedia's Web Publishing division. "Macromedia is pleased to work with NeoPlanet to provide consumers a more engaging Web experience and give their advertisers more effective ways to reach audiences."
As more and more Web application and hardware device developers are discovering, the Flash Player's powerful feature set can be integrated directly into applications. Leading Web browsers and operating systems currently distribute the Flash Player, allowing users to experience Web sites designed in Flash wherever they browse the Web. Eighty-three percent of Web surfers can view Flash content online without having to download and install a player, according to a recent NPD Online Research survey conducted in June. Based on current estimates from industry research groups, this equates to more than 140 million people who can natively view Flash content in their browsers and Web-enabled appliances and devices.
The Flash Player is the standard for delivering vectors on the Web and includes integrated support for high-fidelity MP3 streaming audio and Flash-based forms for ecommerce. Macromedia's award-winning Flash authoring software dramatically streamlines the development process with an authoring environment optimized to help developers create bandwidth-efficient Web sites and applications that combine the production values of television with the immediacy and interactivity of the Internet. Flash content and applications can also be created with Macromedia FreeHand and Generator.
